Mei Zen vs. microneedling

Mei Zen cosmetic acupuncture

$189 · $150/visit on a treatment plan

“Mei Zen” translates loosely to “beautiful skin.” Very fine needles are placed in the face along with body points, as a structured series. It’s designed as a whole-person treatment — many patients find it deeply relaxing.

Feels like
Tiny pinpricks, then rest. Sessions are about an hour.
Downtime
Minimal; small bruises are possible.
Good fit for
People wanting a gradual, natural refresh and the calming benefits of acupuncture.

Microneedling

$299.99

Microneedling creates tiny, controlled micro-channels in the skin with a sterile device. Reviews suggest it can improve the appearance of acne scars and some signs of skin aging. Nano-needling is a gentler, more superficial variation.

Feels like
A light, sandpaper-like vibration after a calm prep.
Downtime
Usually redness for a day or two; sun protection afterward is essential.
Good fit for
Texture, fine lines and mild acne scarring, in people without active breakouts or infection.

Realistic expectations

Gradual, subtle and individual

Cosmetic acupuncture is not a facelift, filler or neurotoxin. Changes tend to be gradual and subtle, depend on your skin, age, lifestyle and consistency, and need maintenance. We'll be honest about what's realistic for you.

Safety & contraindications

  • — Not performed over active acne, infection, cold sores, rashes or open wounds.
  • — Tell us about blood thinners, bleeding disorders, recent fillers or neurotoxins, isotretinoin use, keloid history, or pregnancy.
  • — Migraine-prone or very sensitive patients may need a modified approach.
  • — Pigment changes are possible after microneedling, particularly in darker skin tones; we’ll discuss your individual risk.

Cosmetic acupuncture & microneedling

Evidence for cosmetic facial acupuncture is a single small, uncontrolled pilot study showing some improvement in a facial elasticity measure, with mild bruising as the main side effect. For microneedling, reviews suggest improvement in acne scars and signs of skin aging with short downtime; studies are generally small, and pigment changes are possible.

Patient experiences

In patients’ words

Kristina is amazing! I was having a terrible time with my pregnancy. After just one visit, I felt so much better. When I saw my husband afterwards, his first words were, “you look different!” I felt different. I suddenly felt empowered. Better yet, all the symptoms that had really been plaguing me for weeks cleared right up! I highly recommend Kristina for all your acupuncture needs!

FAQ

Cosmetic questions

How many sessions will I need?

Cosmetic acupuncture is typically done as a series rather than a single session, followed by maintenance visits. Dr. Kristina will recommend a plan at your consultation; results vary from person to person.

Is there downtime?

Mei Zen usually has little downtime, though small bruises are possible. Microneedling commonly causes redness for a day or two. Avoid scheduling either right before an important event.

How should I prepare?

Arrive with a clean face — no makeup or skincare product — and eat beforehand. Let us know about any recent procedures, retinoid or acne medication use, or active skin conditions.

Who should not have microneedling?

Microneedling isn't appropriate over active acne, infection, cold sores or open wounds, and may not be suitable if you've recently used isotretinoin, have a history of keloid scarring, or are pregnant. Dr. Kristina will review your history first.

Will you show before-and-after photos?

Only real Seven Medicine patients who have given written consent. We never use stock or edited images to represent results.
